When using natural hair care products, washing your hair can be a gentle and nourishing ritual. Here’s our guide to help you get the most from your natural True to Life hair care routine:
Don'ts!!
-
Never use only shampoo!
Shampoo’s role is to cleanse your hair and scalp — not to nourish. Always follow with a conditioner or treatment to restore moisture and balance. -
Don’t wash your hair more than twice a week.
Over-washing strips away natural oils that keep your hair strong, soft, and healthy. -
Avoid daily washing.
Even gentle, natural shampoos can cause dryness and imbalance if used too often. -
If your hair feels oily from sweating, try a gentle rinse with water or co-wash with conditioner instead of shampoo.
Only use shampoo again if absolutely necessary — your hair will thank you!
Pre-Preparation
Washing
When using a natural shampoo, always start with thoroughly wet hair. Because natural shampoos are sulfate-free, they won’t lather as much as traditional shampoos. You may notice that natural shampoos tend to be more watery in consistency, which is completely normal. They avoid synthetic thickeners and harsh chemicals, offering a gentler and more natural cleansing experience.
Remember, they are just as effective and much better for your hair!
Apply and Massage
Apply the shampoo to your scalp, not your ends, and gently massage it in using your fingertips. Focus on cleansing the scalp, where oil and product buildup accumulate.
Let It Sit
Let the shampoo sit for two to four minutes to let the natural ingredients work their magic.
Shampoo needs to sit on the scalp for the following conditions you selected:
- Thinning Hair
- Dry Scalp
- Oily Scalp
- Combination Scalp
- Dandruff or Flaky Scalp
Rinse the shampoo out with lukewarm water to maintain your hair’s moisture balance. If your hair needs it, use a second light shampoo to remove all impurities.
Rinsing
Use lukewarm water to rinse the shampoo out thoroughly. Avoid using overly hot water, as it can dry out your scalp and hair.
For low porosity hair
Use warmer water to help the hair follicles open up more to assist with absorbing the conditioner in the next step.
Conditioning
Apply a natural conditioner from the mid-lengths to the ends, avoiding the scalp. Also apply to the top of your head on the hair just away from your scalp. A lot of people struggle with frizziness and dryness in this area on top of the head.
Once applied, gently work the conditioner through your hair with a comb or a wet brush, ensuring even distribution.
Let it sit for 4 minutes minimum before rinsing.
When rinsing, use cool water to help seal the cuticles, locking in moisture and enhancing shine.
For low porosity hair
After applying and before rinsing, use a warm towel and wrap it around your head so the heat helps the conditioner penetrate the hair strand.
Drying your Hair
Once out of the shower, gently squeeze excess water from your hair with your hands, a microfiber towel or a cotton T-shirt, avoiding rough towel drying, which can cause frizz and tangle your hair. Allow your hair to air dry when possible, as heat styling can strip away the nourishing effects of natural products. Some hair responds well to blow drying, so do what is right for you.
Insight
When using natural hair products, your hair automatically has a blow-dried look without using a hair dryer, and wehave found that you don't even need a straightening iron, as the products remove the frizz automatically.
Natural products support your natural hair type. For instance, if you have wavy hair the products will support the natural wave.
Amazing right!
Bonus Tip
Incorporating a leave-in conditioner or a light natural oil like jojoba or argan to the ends of your hair post-wash can add extra moisture and protection, keeping your hair soft, shiny, and healthy.
