Performing a Hair Porosity Test is a simple way to help you determine how well your hair absorbs and retains moisture. Knowing your hair porosity level can guide you in choosing the right hair care products like hair mist, conditioner, or shampoo. Here’s a step-by-step instruction for doing a hair porosity test at home:

Step-by-Step Hair Porosity Test

Table of Contents

Prepare Your Hair

  • Clean your brush from any loose hair.
  • Ensure your hair is clean and free of any product buildup. Wash your hair with a gentle shampoo and let it dry naturally before performing the test.
  • Select a strand of hair from your comb or brush.

Gather Your Materials

  • A clean glass or bowl filled with room-temperature water.
  • A strand of your clean, dry hair from your brush.

Perform the Test

  • Step 1: Fill the glass or bowl with room-temperature water.
  • Step 2: Place the strand of hair gently on the water’s surface.
  • Step 3: Push the strand down gently to below the surface so the hair breaks the surface tension (otherwise your result might always show low porosity as it floats ontop fo the surface).
  • Step 4: Observe the strand for 2 to 4 minutes to see what happens.

Analyze the Results

  • Low Porosity (Floats on Top): If the hair strand floats on top of the water and stays there, it indicates low porosity. Low porosity hair has tightly closed cuticles, making it difficult for moisture to penetrate, but it is retained well once it is absorbed.
  • Medium/Normal Porosity (Sinks Slowly): If the hair strand slowly sinks to the middle of the glass, it indicates medium or normal porosity. This type of hair has a balanced ability to absorb and retain moisture, making it easy to manage and style.
  • High Porosity (Sinks Quickly): If the hair strand quickly sinks to the bottom of the glass, it indicates high porosity. High porosity hair has raised cuticles, allowing moisture to enter easily, but it also loses moisture quickly, leading to dryness and frizz.

Recommendations Based on Results

  • Low Porosity:
    • Use lightweight, water-based products that won’t sit on the surface.
    • Avoid heavy oils and butters that can cause buildup.
    • Consider using a steamer or heat when deep conditioning to help products penetrate the hair.
  • Medium/Normal Porosity:
    • Use balanced products that maintain moisture without being too heavy.
    • Regular deep conditioning helps to maintain the health of the hair.
    • This hair type can generally tolerate a broader range of products.
  • High Porosity:
    • Use heavier, more moisturizing products like creams, butters, and oils to lock in moisture.
    • Incorporate protein treatments to help strengthen the hair and reduce damage.
    • Avoid harsh chemical treatments that can further raise the cuticle layer.
